“Even Plato needed Socrates for a mentor”. Ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon. My job today is to talk about my DOST mentor.
When I was in fourth year high school, I was often asked which university I would like to be in for college. I always answered, “Any university except UP Diliman.” This is the school I disliked the most. I just made UP-D my first choice in the UPCAT because I heard that passing here can allow me to enroll in any UP campus. Anyway, I passed and got a scholarship- the DOST Merit Scholarship. I finally decided to enroll at UP Tacloban. However, complexities in the processing of transfer to another campus discouraged me so I had no choice but go on with UP Dil.
I was apprehensive, afraid that I might turn out to be the most stupid girl in class, knowing that my classmates would be the cream of the crop of many high schools all over the country. I dreaded meeting the so called “most radical and insensitive people”, the “UPians”. Besides, UP being “walang pakialamanan,” as many friends warned me, I could see myself coping with loneliness alone, apart from my family and friends back in Leyte.
But things didn’t turn out the way I expected. Here at UP I met a very patient person who followed up on my academic performance, She encouraged me to excel, showed concern for my well-being, and was a fun buddy who stayed by my side as I faced the challenges of UP student life. We aren’t related by blood or friendship. Yet she cared. In her, I found a coach, a family, and a friend. She is no other than my DOST Mentor.
In my freshman years, my mentor was my personal coach. I remember our first meeting. She promised she’ll help me become a University or College Scholar if I just cooperate and do my best. I laughed. “That’s too ambitious!” I replied. She told me it wasn’t impossible, but deep within I still didn’t believe. She never gave up reminding me to give my best, to unleash my greatest potential, to manage my time well, and to discipline myself. I realized what “aiming for the best ” really meant. It was not just aiming for a passing mark, but aiming for a perfect score. By God’s grace and by her encouragement, my ambitious dream of becoming a University Scholar came true.
My mentor wasn’t only an academic coach, but a social coach as well. She taught me practical tips like not combing my hair in public or not wearing micro mini shorts whenever I go out of the girls’ wing.
She also coached me on knowing myself, discovering my strengths and weaknesses, and dealing with people of different temperaments and personalities. Most of all, she always reminded me to remain faithful to God as I faced different challenges in UP.
My mentor became my home away from home. Like my dad, she was one person I found myself accountable to. As an accountability partner, she pushed me to always keep trying when things went rough. She was a mother to me especially when I had misunderstanding with some friends and frustrations in my “love life”. She was a sister whom I could share my funny experiences, favorite novels, and movie stars as well.
As a friend, my mentor brought me to places I haven’t gone before. Kung di dahil sa mentor ko, baka SM North lang at Trinoma ang napuntahan ko dito sa Maynila. But being a nice buddy, she went with me to some other places in the city and helped me expand my horizon.
My first year in UP was not easy at all. But I’m thankful that my mentor helped me cope with those challenges.
Aside from her, there’s another person who guided me all the step of the way. Whenever I carried heavy burdens in academics, he gave me strength to carry on. Whenever I felt sad and lonely, his presence gave comfort and peace. Whenever I felt like giving up, he was there to make me stand again. He enabled me to achieve and adjust to UP life. He deserves all the glory and honor from everything I have accomplished. He is God- my Ultimate Mentor.
My fellow DOST scholars, one of the greatest gifts my Heavenly Mentor gave me was an earthly mentor-my DOST mentor. A blessing from God, she was my coach, my family, and my friend here in UP. I hope that you will be blessed with a mentor like her, too!

DOST Mentoring Program

I voluntarily offer my services to DOST Core Group as a mentor under the following terms and conditions:

1. I shall function as mentor of DOST female/male scholar/s for the SY 2009 -2010.
2. 2.As a mentor, I understand that I am expected to guide the assigned scholar following the DOST Mentoring Program. I take full responsibility over the mentoring sessions with the assigned mentee. 3.I am motivated to help my mentee be a better person, guiding him/her to achieve his/her goals specified in his/her Personal Development Plan (PDP).4.I shall meet my mentee regularly and frequenty on the agreed date, time and place. Should my mentee decide to discontinue the program, I shall immediately notify the person in-charge and provide an assessment on the mentoring that transpired. I accept my responsibililty to participate in all activities arranged for mentors and to be updated on anything related to the program.
3. I shall ensure the confidentiality of the sensitive information learned in the course of my work as a mentor.
4. I warrant that I have the required qualifications and can serve as a mentor to male/female university students. I consent to the processing of my personal data for purposes connected to this engagement and proactively update the person in-charge of any changes. I am open to be evaluated as a mentor at the end of each semester.
5. I render this service free of charge and shoulder any personal expense incurred during the conduct of my duty as a mentor.
6. This agreement may be terminated by either party for whatever reasons subject to prior notice.

How to be a PALCI Mentor?

The steps to become a PALCI mentor:

1. Applicant submits a completed application form and screened for fitness to the association.

2. Applicant seen to imbibe the Vision and Mission of PALCI completes the training plan and passes all the exams.

3. At the opportune time, the applicant is given a mentee with whom he/she conducts 1-1 coaching sessions. During this period, evaluation may be conducted on the quality of coaching that is conducted. At the end of this stage, the application is evaluated. This ends the application period. If successful, the applicant becomes a member of PALCI.

4. Members must continuously improve their coaching competency.
